Duckwrth’s highly anticipated debut studio album SuperGood comes at a time when people are in desperate need of some cheering up.

Having finished writing and recording the album in late January, Duckwrth’s initial intention to provide listeners with joyous, celebratory anthems for feeling good in the new year changed drastically as the new year quickly revealed itself to be plagued by COVID-19, systemic racism and governmental incompetence. Instead, the album transformed into a series of melodic, meticulously magical reminders to get up and seek out the happiness in life despite, but in accordance with, restrictions imposed by the pandemic.

Drawing inspiration from both his childhood and the ‘70s, SuperGood is a record deeply rooted in west coast fantasy. Dubbing this a “lifestyle project”, Duckwrth explores an intimate scenario, playing a character as he depicts fantasizing about a girl he has asked out. While trying to remain calm and collected on the surface, he nonetheless experiences an incessant internal battle with insecurities that Duckwrth describes as the “ying and yang” present within relationships. This message, in conjunction with luxe synths, smooth basslines and funky twangs of guitar, is one entrenched with a love for life’s little pleasures and embodied by a masterful exploration of musical and visual variations. Transcending the boundaries of any singular genre, Duckwrth considers himself to be a “segue of different genres”, a lot like a smoothie in that he “puts all the flavors together and creates the juice that you drink and enjoy.”

Duckwrth is predominantly focused on taking care of his personal wellbeing during these trying times, stating “my artist doesn’t need as much love as my human right now”. However, we can expect to see more from him in the future and SuperGood provides enough evidence to suggest that Duckwrth is on his way to bigger and better things.
