LIVE REVIEW: LOWERLIPDRIP at The Rath

Experimental rap duo LOWERLIPDRIP traveled to Madison from Chicago for a WUD Music sponsored show at The Rathskeller on Saturday, February 29th.

The night opened with a performance from The Slaps, a fellow Chicago-based group self-describing as “beach blues.” The Slaps’ sunny, breezy sound is drastically different from LOWERLIPDRIP’s generally abrasive vibe. Oddly enough, the crowd seemed satisfied with the group’s consecutive positions on the bill.

The best way to describe LOWERLIPDRIP’s stage presence is intense. From their blunt, politically-charged lyrics and heavy, unconventional beats, to their simultaneously intimidating yet intriguing interaction with their audience, LOWERLIPDRIPS’s live performance is unlike anything else I’ve seen.

The duo performed tracks from the three dual-track singles they released in 2019, including their most recent: I Put My Whole Life on the Internet. The tracks, “Auto Save” and “Live Stream,” gained traction after getting placed on Spotify’s Alternative Hip Hop playlist last year and appeared to be crowd favorites with the audience at The Rathskeller as well.

LOWERLIPDRIP hinted at a new, full-length project that is set to release in May of 2020. With their uniquely edgy and industrial style, LOWERLIPDRIP is already turning heads, and with the release of new music, this attention will amass.
